Ask for the plant's outbound transportation manager. Finished-goods outbound to distribution centres is the truckload freight worth having. Delivery to homes is a separate last-mile business with its own carriers and does not overlap. Retail and builder distribution centres are the receivers, and they run tight appointment discipline.
Where it hauls
A tight industrial belt. Ohio is the densest, with washer and dryer production at Clyde and Marion and further plants at Ottawa and Greenville. Kentucky carries Appliance Park at Louisville. Tennessee has added meaningful capacity, with plants at Clarksville and Springfield. Iowa and the Carolinas fill in. To the plants, February into MarchDamage is the whole conversation on this freight. A scratched panel is a total loss on a unit worth hundreds of dollars, and a carrier who raises load securement before rate is having a different conversation from everyone else.
Qualifying questions
- How is it loaded and secured? Appliances are tall, light and easily scratched. They need load bars, airbags or straps and they must not shift. Confirm the securement expectation, because the claim here is cosmetic damage and it is expensive.
- What does it cube versus weigh? This is classic cube-out freight: the trailer fills to the roof well below legal weight. Get the unit count, not the tonnage, because the piece count is the constraint.
- Is it going to a distribution centre or a builder site? Distribution centre delivery is dock-to-dock and straightforward. Builder and jobsite work involves uncrating, floor protection and a completely different service level. Ask which.
- Who inspects at delivery, and how? Receivers inspect appliances carton by carton and note damage on the spot. Find out what the inspection is and whether the driver is expected to be present for it, because that is when the claim gets decided.
- Are there returns or reverse logistics? Damaged and swapped units go back, and reverse loads are real volume in this category. Ask whether they need return capacity, because it is often the part nobody has covered.
When to call
February and March, ahead of the spring housing pull. A second, smaller build runs into late summer. Because the demand driver is housing rather than a season, the freight is steadier than most on this calendar, and a lane won in spring generally holds through the year.
