Head offices of four national networks. Each runs dozens of regional distribution centres, and the distribution centre is where the freight actually moves.
Ask for inbound transportation at the distribution centre. Store replenishment is usually run on dedicated fleets or established regional carriers. The inbound leg, from manufacturers and importers into the distribution centre, is the truckload business and it is far more open. Ask for the inbound planner, not the outbound one.
Where it hauls
Three tiers, and each one is freight. Manufacturers and tier suppliers ship into regional distribution centres, which are placed to reach their stores overnight and are spread across every major market in the country. Those distribution centres then run store replenishment, which is short, nightly and enormous in aggregate. Import parts add port drayage on the front. The networks to know:
How to open
"Who covers your inbound from suppliers? I'm not chasing the store runs, I'm after the freight coming into the building."
To distribution centres, January into FebruaryExplicitly not asking for the store network is what gets you a conversation. Everyone pitches the visible freight; the inbound is bigger, less contested and much better suited to a broker.
Qualifying questions
- Inbound to the distribution centre, or store replenishment? Inbound is truckload from suppliers and importers. Store replenishment is short, nightly, multi-stop and usually already covered. Establish which one is on offer before you invest any time.
- What does it scale? Enormously variable. A load of filters cubes out light; a load of brake rotors or batteries scales heavy immediately. Get the commodity mix, not just the pallet count.
- Any hazmat? Batteries, aerosols, oils and airbag modules all carry classifications. A mixed parts load can quietly include hazmat. Ask directly, because the paperwork and the driver endorsement are not optional.
- What is the appointment discipline? Parts distribution centres run tight inbound schedules because the outbound leaves on a fixed nightly cycle. A late inbound truck misses the whole night. Get the window and treat it as firm.
- Is there a returns flow? Cores, warranty returns and overstock move backwards through this network constantly. Reverse capacity is real volume and it is chronically under-served.
When to call
January and February, when annual arrangements get placed. Beyond that there is no window to miss: the freight runs every week of the year. What does move is the mix, with heavier demand in spring and autumn as weather changes drive maintenance, and a reliable winter spike in batteries and starters.
