A head office and named plants. Niagara alone operates more than 50 bottling plants, so the site serving your lane is rarely the address here.

Ask for the plant's transportation coordinator. This is high-frequency, short-haul, low-rate freight, which means the shipper cares about reliability and availability far more than about a few dollars. Volume is the compensation: a plant running at capacity in July needs trucks every single day.

Where it hauls

Plants sit next to water and next to people, because shipping water any distance is uneconomic. That means a dense national network rather than a few big origins: over 50 plants for one bottler alone, placed to serve their regions. How to open

The storm question is the one worth asking. When a hurricane is forecast, retailers order water by the trailer with days of notice, and the bottler needs capacity that can appear immediately. Being that number is a real position.

Qualifying questions

• What does it scale? Water is the definition of weigh-out freight. A trailer reaches legal weight well before it looks full. Get the pallet count and target gross and expect the trailer to look half empty.
• Is it going to a distribution centre or direct to store? Distribution centre delivery is dock to dock. Direct store delivery on promotional weeks means multiple stops and pallet jacks. Very different day, so establish which.
• Does it need protection from freezing? Frozen bottles split and the whole load is scrap. In northern winters this is a real risk on a load nobody thinks of as temperature-sensitive. Ask about protective service.
• Is this a storm order? Hurricane stocking creates urgent, large, short-notice orders. They pay differently and they matter more. Knowing whether you are in one changes the whole conversation.
• How is it palletized? Shrink-wrapped cases stack high and can shift or collapse. Confirm the pallet pattern and whether load bars are expected, because a collapsed load of water is a long afternoon.

When to call

March and April, ahead of the summer build. The hurricane season overlay runs June to November and is genuinely unpredictable, which is the opportunity: nobody can plan for it, so a carrier who answers the phone in that week gets remembered for the next one.
