Qualifying questions
- How is it packed, and what does it scale? Celery is mostly water and it ships in tall cartons that are heavy for their size. A full load scales closer to legal weight than most produce. Get the carton count and the target gross.
- What is the setpoint? Just above freezing, around 32 to 34 degrees. Celery freezes easily and freeze damage shows as translucent, collapsed stalks that the receiver will reject on sight. Confirm the setpoint.
- Is it hearts or whole stalks? Celery hearts come out of a processing line and travel in smaller, denser cases. Whole stalks are bulkier and more easily damaged. They are effectively two different products with two different receivers.
- Which district is cutting? Salinas, Oxnard, Santa Maria or Yuma, depending on the month. Asking which one tells you the lane and shows you understand the crop is arranged so it never stops.
- Is this a standing weekly lane? Celery programmes run all year, which makes recurring freight genuinely available here. Ask directly whether they want a weekly commitment, because that is worth more to both sides than a spot load.
When to call
September and October, as the desert season is planned. But celery is the one item on this list where an off-season call still works, because the crop never stops and somebody is always short a truck. Ask for the standing weekly lane rather than the seasonal surge.
