Who ships corrugated

Ask for the plant's shipping or logistics coordinator. Corrugated runs on a plant-by-plant basis even inside the big integrated companies, so a national conversation is usually the wrong one. Sheet plants and independents are often the easier door than the integrateds, and they run the same short, frequent lanes. Ask whether they are a full corrugator or a sheet plant, because it changes what moves and how often.

Where it hauls

Everywhere, and deliberately so. Corrugated is bulky, light and cheap relative to its volume, so plants sit inside a short drive of the people who fill the boxes: about 1,150 plants across North America, with the heaviest concentration around food processing, produce packing and distribution corridors. How to open

The thing that lands here is knowing whose peak they serve. A plant feeding produce packers has a completely different calendar from one feeding e-commerce, and asking which tells them you have thought about their business rather than your truck.

Qualifying questions

• How many bundles, and what does it scale? Corrugated cubes out long before it weighs out. A full trailer of knocked-down boxes can be barely half of legal weight. Get the bundle count and the loading pattern, because the only real question is whether it fits.
• Is it going to a plant or a distribution centre? Plant deliveries feed a production line and a late truck stops it. Distribution centres are more forgiving but run appointments. Ask which, because on the plant side the delivery time is the whole job.
• Does it have to stay dry? Corrugated loses strength when it gets damp and a wet load is a rejected load. Confirm the trailer is clean and dry and that the doors seal, which sounds obvious until it is your claim.
• Full corrugator or sheet plant? A corrugator makes board and runs bigger, steadier outbound volume. A sheet plant buys board in and converts it, which means inbound freight too. Ask which they are, because it tells you what lanes exist.
• Whose season are you building for? A box plant's calendar is its customers' calendar. Produce packers, protein plants and e-commerce all peak at different times. The answer tells you when their busy weeks are, which is when they need you.

When to call

July and August, ahead of the autumn pack and the run into holiday. That is when box plants are building for their customers' peaks and when their own outbound gets tight. The freight itself runs all year at high frequency, which is the appeal: short lanes, repeat volume, and a plant that will use a reliable carrier every week rather than every season.
