Who ships pears

Ask for the traffic or transportation manager. With only 29 handlers for more than 800 growers, this is a concentrated call list and the same desks handle apples and cherries. Pears are the quieter third of the tree fruit business, which makes them a reasonable way into a house that also ships the other two.

How to open

Pears reward a carrier who understands they are picked firm and ripened later. A load that gets too warm in transit starts a clock the packer did not choose to start.

Qualifying questions

• What is the setpoint, and is it conditioned fruit? Pears run cold, around 30 to 32 degrees for storage varieties. Conditioned fruit has been deliberately warmed to start ripening and is far more fragile. Ask which you are hauling, because they are not the same load.
• Which variety? Bartletts, Anjous, Bosc and Comice behave differently in storage and in transit. The variety tells the packer you have hauled this before and it tells you how much margin for error you have.
• How many boxes and what does it scale? Standard box equivalents run around 44 pounds. Get the count and the pallet pattern, because pear loads scale heavier than people expect for fruit.
• Is it going to a ripening room? A lot of pears deliver into a receiver's ripening programme with a firm arrival window, because the room is booked. Late is not late, it is a missed slot.
• Do you pack apples and cherries here too? Usually yes. Pears are the smallest of the three by volume, so a pear conversation in July is a reasonable route into a house whose apple programme runs most of the year.

When to call

July and August, before harvest opens. Fruit is picked mature but hard, then conditioned and released from storage across most of the following year, so a seat won at harvest is a lane that keeps producing into the spring. It is the same shape as apples and often the same building.
